Describe the situation that the narrator finds herself in at the beginning of the story. Discuss Johns attitude and behavior toward his wife, especially in terms of her illness. In the course of thinking about this issue, consider the symbolism of the nursery. Why are they staying at the house? Describe the bedroom. Is she insane at the beginning of the Story? Do you agree with the postpartum depression?What do we know about the baby? What does she notice about the paper? Why does she only see them? What are the differences in the wallpaper during the day and at night? What commentary is she making here? (Is this a feminist text?) Why does she decide to rip off the wallpaper? Does Jennie see why Jane is doing it? Why does she not want to go outside after ripping off the wall paper? Who is the figure in the wallpaper? What does the wallpaper symbolize? In what ways might the ending of the story be seen as both a victory and a defeat for the narrator? In what ways is her situation both similar to and different from that of the creeping woman in the wallpaper?
