Papers should be observation based and not theory-led, making use of detailed observational material to indicate the quality of the babys developing emotional life and the dynamics at play in their relationships.It is expected that psychoanalytic thinking is used to help demonstrate understanding of the detail of what is observed. Psychoanalytic ideas that are drawn on to help illuminate observational material should be explained in the students own words and referenced. Ideas from Child Development Research may also help to inform understanding of the context and the impact of the babys circumstances on their emotional development;The capacity to root an understanding of the babys development in what has been observed; the paper must include excerpts from detailed observation notes so that there is direct evidence for points being made. The capacity to pay attention to unconscious processes and unconscious communication as revealed in observations and through the emotional experience of observing. The capacity to relate observations and themes to relevant psychoanalytic and child development research literature. The ability to make use of relevant references in psychoanalytic and child development research literature when the ideas help to illuminate the babys development in their family as evidenced by observational material. An awareness of the scope and limitations of the observer role and of the students learning from observation, while ensuring that this is not a main focus of the paper: the paper should not be autobiographical.
