Description1. Based on close reading, compare and contrast the treatments of tradition in T.S.Eliot’s “Tradition and Individual Talent” and Barbara Herrnsteitn Smith’s “Contingencies of Value”. (the two essays shall serve as the primary texts for this essay)2. The essay should show evidence of research (drawing on a range of secondary materials to develop your arguments)3. The essay should demonstrate a knowledge of the broader background of the issues and debates in critical theory. 4. no plagiarism tolerant. Limited use of secondary sources. The essay should be structured based on different points of comparison between the two essays. Secondary sources are to support the arguments. The following is an intended strcture of the essay (can be altered and rearranged): Introduction: – using Eliot’s quote to demonstrate the problem raised around the discussion about tradition -using secondary materials to offer a background of the past discussion on tradition-how does Barbara Smith engage in the topic-clearly state the thesis of the essayMain Body (comparison):1. an overview(summary) of the two essays (no longer than 200 words)2. Against what contexts did the Eliot and Smith raise their problem- 3. connection between the two (what topics do they both cover in the two essays? )(perhaps include Smith’s comment on Eliot’s theoretical thoughts)4. compare- What is “tradition” (for Smith perhaps “classic”) in the two essays (definition) (tradition and canon- what constitutes the tradition for both theorists?)5. (perhaps most effort should be put for this point) compare -the criterion of tradition in assessment and evaluation for the two theorists. (For Eliot, tradition is exactly where the value lies; For Smith, the value is contingent- how does she treat tradition in her criterion of evaluation)6. compare- the role of individual uniqueness in tradition 7. compare- the condition and changing nature of tradition- Is there a significant difference between Eliot’s views and Smith’s views: given that Eliot’s idea of tradition is also of something that changes and varies over time?
